De Stijlted

Year:

2023

Dimensions:
24" x 30"
Materials:
Oil on Canvas

Info:
“De Stijl” a genre of art popularized by Piet Mondrian and other artists whose work adhered to strict rules like only primary colors and only straight lines set at only right angles. While I do take some inspiration from Mondrian and De Stijl as a whole, my goals with this series are stifled under such rules.

I adhere to my own. Most important of these rules is that my lines should harmonize to suggest motion and space.

Edge of the Void #2

Year:

2022

Dimensions:
24" x 30"
Materials:
Oil on Canvas

Info:
“A bridge that connects my “Void” series of color forward action paintings to my new, more methodical series of paintings which I call the “Edge” series.

Present in this piece are many textures, black drips, hairs from a paint roller, a line of white paint applied directly from the tube, and scratches revealing a red glow from within the white. There are two notable features of black: one at the bottom right which has a certain personhood; a callback to my “Void”paintings which explored the visceral nature of black paint. At the top is a black bar or line which is a foreshadowing of my “Edge” series.

This piece was created to be a “Void” painting and was the second in a series of three, but in retrospect it serves as the perfect segway to the paintings that came after it and is the only one of the series of three to survive, the others having been destroyed.”

Invited to exhibit in “Footprint” juried show at Art St. Louis, St. Louis, MO. October 2021.

“An illusory statement on dualism. Sections of the painting float and recede in visual space creating a holographic image. The work discusses identity, nihilism, creativity and personal emptiness. The void that cannot be filled. Shades of red engage in futile protest to the encroaching inky darkness that constantly threatens to swallow us whole.”

Info:
Commissioned work inspired by Otto Mueller’s “Three Women in a Wood” a painting which I love for its crude texture and black outlines. In this piece, I interpret Mueller’s simplification of the figure with charcoal gestures carved into silver cold wax.
